All About Dog Treats

Low Fat Dog Treats

Your dog’s weight can sneak up on you. You remember them as lean, active puppies then notice one day that they have started to waddle.

You’re not alone in your surprise. Almost 50% of dogs are overweight and over 15% of them can be called, “Obese.” This qualifies as epidemic! And we know plenty of people recommend stopping all treats at that point but who are they kidding? We love to give treats to our dogs, especially when we have to change their lives significantly by switching and/or cutting back on meals.

For some realistic guidance on canine weight loss, read my blog over at Three “M”s for Canine Weight Management.

Here are two tips on dog treats for overweight dogs:

  • Breaking up is good to do! Use small pieces. Delivered with your smile and a kind word, your dog will be delighted, but not inflated.
  • Use low fat dog treats. Any plain, lean, freeze-dried muscle meat is low fat and low cal (in small portions). Look for treats made for this purpose, like the ones below.
